If you suffer from sciatica, the pain can cause you to experience a drastic shift in your overall functionality and quality of life. Many traditional sciatica treatments can fail to deliver lasting results, but that doesn’t mean you have to settle for decreased mobility. With our professional chiropractic treatments at Absolute Chiropractic & Rehab in Hurst, TX, you can finally alleviate your sciatica pain.

What is sciatica?

Sciatica is pain that travels down the sciatic nerve. This nerve, present on both sides of the body, stretches from the lumbar (or lower) spine all the way down the backs of the legs. The intensity of the pain can range from minor, dull aches to sharp, searing bursts of pain. Sciatica can also cause muscle weakness, tingling, and numbness in the affected areas.

What are the causes of sciatica?

Sciatica typically occurs when the area surrounding the sciatic nerve becomes inflamed. This irritation is usually the result of one of three conditions:

  • Pinched nerve: A pinched nerve occurs when excessive pressure is placed on a nerve, causing pain and discomfort. It can be caused by injury, repetitive motions, or keeping a certain part of the body in one position for an extended amount of time.
  • Herniated disc: A spinal vertebra has two parts. It is composed of the disc nucleus, the soft center,  and the annulus, which acts as a protective layer. When excessive pressure is applied to the disc, the nucleus can be pushed through a gap in the annulus. This condition is referred to as a herniated disc. The part of the nucleus that has escaped the annulus can press down on the surrounding nerves, causing pain.
  • Bone spurs: These small protrusions can form on the edges of your bones. They decrease the amount of space between your discs, causing more force to be exerted on the nerves.

How can chiropractic help?

Chiropractic is a non-invasive treatment method for sciatica pain. Your chiropractor is uniquely qualified to diagnose spinal disorders, and our experienced team at Absolute Chiropractic & Rehab can help you get to the root of your sciatica discomfort. Using a series of gentle adjustments, your chiropractor will realign your spine and reduce the amount of pressure being applied to your sciatic nerve.
