Why Your Joints May Hurt When It Is Cold

Cold weather can make you feel tired and fatigued. However, the cold can also exacerbate joint pain and cause you to experience some discomfort when the temperature drops. Read on to discover the reason your joints may start to ache when it begins to get chilly.

Arthritis

One of the most common causes of joint pain is arthritis. This condition occurs when your joints become inflamed due to age, joint injuries, general wear and tear, or the degeneration of the surrounding cartilage. Your symptoms and treatment options may vary depending on the type of arthritis you are diagnosed with, such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.

Atmospheric Pressure

When the temperature begins to decrease, the level of atmospheric pressure drops. In warmer weather, a higher level of atmospheric pressure keeps your joints from expanding or spreading out. However, when that pressure goes down, your joints suddenly have a bit more room to expand, and the tissues around your joints can begin to stretch. When this happens, it can irritate the nerves surrounding your joints and lead to pain or discomfort.

Muscle Stiffness

There’s a reason athletes have to warm up before a match or game. Cold muscles are much less pliable than warm muscles, and the cool weather can cause you to become stiff. Your muscles then become more difficult to move around, putting even more pressure on your sensitive joints. If you are already dealing with arthritis pain, this stiffness can exacerbate your symptoms.

Chiropractic Treatments for Joint Pain

Chiropractic treatments are a highly effective method of managing joint pain due to arthritis and cold weather. Using a series of gentle adjustments, your chiropractor can carefully shift your joints back into proper alignment. This will reduce the inflammation in your joints that can cause you to experience the painful symptoms of arthritis.
