How to Prevent Neck Pain While Sitting at Your Computer Desk

Written By Absolute Chiropractic & Rehab on October 24, 2019

Man with neck pain Do you suffer from chronic neck pain and don’t know why?

Well, if you have an office job, you are most likely incurring neck pain from countless hours of sitting at your desk. When you sit for long periods, the muscles in your back and neck tend to weaken – resulting in poor posture and muscle strain.

To beat the neck pain before it happens, or to help relieve it after the fact, here are 3 ways that you can kiss pesky neck pain goodbye.

The 3 Rules of In-Office Neck Pain Treatment

For improved posture and neck pain, here are 3 rules you need to act on now for the ultimate neck pain treatment:

1. Practice Proper Sitting Posture

For proper posture, make sure you are sitting in your chair with your lower back against the back of the chair. Place your feet flat on the ground, keep your shoulders back and away from your neck, and straighten your back. Learning not to slouch will take the pressure off your neck muscles and shoulders – diminishing muscle strain.

2. Stretch, and Stretch Often

It is always a good idea to stretch. Stretching releases tension from your muscles – so you don’t feel tight and stiff at the end of a long day. It is wise to take mini-breaks throughout your day to stretch, as you can stretch at your desk or in your car on your lunch break.

3. Adjust Your Computer Screen

Adjust your computer screen so that it sits at eye-level. Adjusting your screen too far up or down can result in strained neck muscles from too much craning of the neck.
